Amorim downplayed the facts that Iran does not comply with UN resolutions and that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said sanctions "are not worth a penny."
"In terms of not observing the Security Council resolutions, Iran certainly is not the only country. And we continue to engage with them. This does not prevent Brazil from maintaining diplomatic relations with those countries," he said.
Asked about the reasons for Brazil's rapprochement with Iran, the foreign minister stressed that his country's purpose was to pursue international peace.
"If we establish relations only with those of our image and likeness, we make no step forward," he said.
Earlier, Lula said the decision of the Security Council was "a mistake" that undermined the United Nations.
